Released April 21, 2009, Asher Roths debut album, Asleep in the Bread Aisle is garnering some great publicity. He broke into the mainstream with the campus party theme song, I Love College and has since been called the latest “Eminem” type artist to hit the big time. While I don’t think he is anywhere near the same caliber as Eminem his flow and voice is somewhat similar. I emphasize the somewhat. Unlike Eminem, Asher comes from an average suburban upbringing, which gives him a new sound, setting Asleep in the Bread Aisle apart from recent music releases in the hip-hop genre. He doesn’t rap about selling drugs, big whips, girls, icy jewelry and money, instead he focuses on good times had by the average kid.
As far as latest music releases go, Asher’s album is catching more media coverage than anyone else. His breakout album has 13 tracks, which call on inspiration from Southern blues, Hip Hop and R&B. People either love him or hate him but one thing is certain and that is music with lyrics about something different then stereotypical rap scenarios is a nice change.
